She Had Arthritis–Check Out What Her Doctor Told Her!

I had a conversation with a nurse today, who told me about one of her friends. This friend was very overweight, crippled with arthritis and had several other health problems. One day her doctor called her and asked her to come to his office that same day. She struggled to get out of bed and dressed. With her severe arthritis, hurrying was not an option. When she arrived, the doctor told her he had just been at a seminar and he thought he had the answer to her arthritis and problems walking—and something to help with other health problems also.

She was excited—wanted to know if it was an injection or a new medicine! Could she get started that same day? The doctor told her she must start walking every day—4 times a day. The woman was dismayed—she was expecting a magical cure. She had great difficulty just getting from her bed to the bathroom. The doctor said—that is fine. Just get someone to help you and walk a short distance inside your house 4 times a day and increase the distance just a little as you are able. The woman followed the doctor’s suggestion and it was slow progress—but progress!!

Today she is the picture of health—has lost weight—other health conditions improved—and she still walks 4 times a day—outside with her dog! My friend saw her recently and said she is beautiful and obviously very happy. She has even started her own business! Her dog seems to have an internal clock because he comes to her and barks 4 times a day for their walk.

We often think we must do big things to get fit and improve our health while just STARTING is the answer.

Keep watching for our blog posts. In a few days you will see an article on Walking With Arthritis that is based on info from Mayo Clinic and the Arthritis Foundation.

So Blessed

i AM BLESSED!

In dealing with day to day problems, it is easy to think about the problems-how to solve them—and just generally obsess about them. I am often reminded that no matter what I face, my BLESSINGS far outweigh my problems.

Today I had to find a new doctor’s office a little distance away so we went early to be sure we were not late. Thank goodness our i-pad directed us there 1 hour early and we had time for lunch. As we drove down a little access road from the doctor’s office to a couple of restaurants, we saw a lady sitting alone on a curb as we drove by. Coming back from the restaurant, we saw she had a sign

COMFORT means ‘to improve the mood of or restore a sense of well-being to’. Do you always feel like you are reaching out to friends, family, even strangers to offer comfort? Well, there are times you need COMFORT too. I hope the things that bring comfort to me might inspire you to find those special things in your own life that will bring COMFORT and peace to you.

Comfort food – We all have our own favorites and times that we need comfort food! This has been an extremely cold winter for many people and you might be needing some comfort food about now. Do You Have A Dream?

Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday.

I’m sure you’re familiar with his famous, “I HAVE A DREAM” speech…(as I type the words I can hear his impassioned voice saying,

Dr. King was one of those rare people who had a vision so big that it didn’t just serve him or his family or a city or a state or a country…It was a vision so powerful that it served (and transformed) humanity.

Weight Loss Goals for 2018–Let’s Be Real!

Okay, let’s be REAL. We are not perfect! Starting a diet or exercise program and expecting perfection is a set-up for failure! I cannot tell you how many times I set up unrealistic goals and because I couldn’t be 100% perfect 24/7, I got discouraged and quit! We need to make lifestyle changes—ones we can live with!!

Here are some ways to achieve your new, realistic goals!!

Tell others your goal—make yourself accountable!! If possible get a buddy and support each other. At one time, I had a friend who went to the gym with me. On days I would have preferred to stay home, I got up and put on my exercise clothes….because my friend was waiting for me. I enjoyed exercising and working really hard because I had a friend who was doing the same!!

Make small changes—in your diet or in your exercise goals. Don’t get overwhelmed by trying to make too many changes all at once. Yes, staying on your food plan 7 days a week is best, but eating right 2 or 3 days a week is a start and much better than eating right 0 days. Exercising 1 or 2 days is certainly better than no exercise. Don’t set yourself up for failure by planning to exercise an hour 7 days a week!!

You won’t be perfect!! When you slip, forgive yourself and start over. Learn from those mistakes. If having Oreos in the house makes you crazy—and they call your name—don’t buy them. Bring in your favorite treats—but only ONE. Stop at the bakery and purchase ONE of your favorite pastries or cookies.

If you have a long term goal, break it up into smaller goals and reward yourself when you reach on of the goals.Love yourself!! Be good to yourself. Be thankful daily for your blessings.

My bosses sent an email on Christmas Day with things to do for that day….BUT I think we would all be better off if we did these things EVERYDAY!! This is our challenge to you.

So for today, put down the stress of too much to do and too little time, forget about that growing stack of bills or the shrinking bank account and just BE PRESENT in the moment.

Find the JOY in THIS moment, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing…

Is Your Perception Hindering Your Future?

I don’t know about where you are–but it’s COLD here!

In fact, my day started off kind of funny. I tend to be a creature of habit as far as how I start my day. When I wake up, I make my way out to my office…which is separate building on our property… about 50 steps from my bedroom door.

Need Help In Reaching Your Fitness Goals?

I know I am not the ONLY ONE!! I read and study nutrition, dieting and exercise. I mentally prepare myself to start a diet…to start exercising…to drink enough water…to just get myself back on track. I have the day planned for starting my new LIFE….and a week later, I am no better off than I was before.

My intentions are good—I know what to do!! Why don’t I just do it? I beat myself up because I am not stronger and I don’t stick with a plan.  I don’t want to have a perfect body—just one that is healthy and that I am proud of.

The times I have done really well with diet and exercise were when I had a friend partnering with me. Is it accountability? Maybe, but I think it is more than that. The times when I was ready to ditch my diet or skip my gym day, my friend would be having a good day and would encourage me! And I would do the same for her on her weak moments.

So try to find a buddy with similar goals and watch your successes add up!!

Ten Minute Health Challenge

I am one of those people who try to do everything 100%. I have found that expecting myself to be nearly perfect is a task I can never achieve. What about you?

Let’s use exercise as an example. I read—and my cardiologist insists—that I should exercise 30 minutes most days of the week. That seems reasonable, doesn’t it?

Want my list of excuses? “I am overwhelmed by all I have to do and just don’t have the time”…”It’s too hot (or cold) outside to walk”…”It is boring to walk on the treadmill”….and I am sure you could add to my list.

The truth is that most days I am unable (or unwilling) to commit to the 30 minutes of exercise!! But wouldn’t 5 or 10 minutes be better than nothing?? Of course it would and maybe some days I could sneak in 10 minutes twice a day….and some days even get in the full 30 minutes!!

This is my challenge to me and to you. Every day work in some exercise. Don’t be defeated and do nothing if you don’t have time for a full 30 minutes of exercise.

Let’s commit to at least 10 minutes daily. You can do it…and so can I!!

Do You Believe You Can Do It?

It’s a familiar conversation…You know it’s there and you send someone to get it.

“It’s in the pantry…second row down and on your right!”

Only to be followed by…”Nope. It’s not in there–we don’t have any!”

So you walk over, open the pantry door and grab it–“What’s this?!”, you say!

“Oh, I didn’t see it”… is the response.

Whatever “it” is or wherever “it” may be– I’m sure you can recall similar conversations at your house, right? They can never “see it”—even though you are 100% certain where it is.

Finally, after my part in raising 7 kids–I got smart. When my youngest son, Daniel, was four, I decided to PURPOSELY create a different result. So I started calling Daniel the “finder of lost things”.  First, I’d ask him to find me things I KNEW he could find–and every time he’d bring me something I’d say…”Oh man, you’re awesome–you’re the finder of lost things!”

Then anytime something was lost or anyone in the house was looking for something I’d say, “Daniel can find anything– he’s the finder of lost things.” And you know what– he can and does!

He just turned 13. A couple months ago we were in DC.  Daniel had just gotten a brand new iPod Touch from the Apple Store that same day. We had spent the rest of the afternoon and evening driving around my favorite spots in Old Alexandria and stopping by a few of the monuments.
