Don’t Let Stress Rule Your Life!

Trying to keep up with the daily demands of LIFE (job, finances, home, family, etc) can be overwhelming!! No matter how hard we try to stay calm, things come up that cause stress in our lives. One main stressor for me in the past two years has been my car!! It is customized (at great expense) for my husband’s power chair so we cannot just trade it in. We have had some major bills and every time the light comes on signaling a problem, I can feel the stress mounting in my body. I have done nothing to cause the car problem and I cannot fix it myself so I should be able to just take it to the mechanic and not be concerned….but I have not figured out how to do that!

How about you? What is stressing you? Do you ever experience anxiety–panic attacks–feel worried–feel your heart race? You are not alone!! Nearly 1 in 5 adults suffer from anxiety.

Why Exercise After 50?

Are you over 50? Remember when we were in our 20’s and 30’s? I would exercise with my main goal being to fit into a certain size clothes…be able to proudly go to the beach…look as good as my friends. How about you?

Now that I am a little older, my priorities have changed. At 50 plus, my health and well-being are my main concerns. My body is not the same as it was in my younger years so the way I exercise has had to change. I have a good life now and I am independent of needing help to enjoy my life…and I want it to stay that way!

I will list a few reasons we need to exercise and the best things to do. I am sure you can add to this list. Exercise to build or maintain muscle mass. Our metabolism slows as we age and muscles burn more calories than fat. Exercise can help with illnesses like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis and many more.

Will An Apple A Day Keep The Doctor Away?

My husband was recently in the hospital and now that he is home, nurses come frequently to check on him. I have learned so much just from listening to them! You know the saying we have heard for years?

Did you know there have been several studies about the effectiveness of eating apples to control cholesterol levels? The University of Oxford reports in 2013 that “the 150 year old proverb, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, stands the test of time”. Their researchers concluded that eating an apple a day would prevent about 8500 deaths from heart attacks and strokes in adults over 50 (in the UK) in a year.

Do You Have Stiff Achy Joints?

REALLY? Are you still suffering with achy, sore joints, stiffness and swelling? Do you know how important Glucosamine is to your body?

Glucosamine is vital for building cartilage which is the flexible, tough connective tissue found in parts of the body. This fine, rubbery tissue functions as padding, a cushion for bones and joints and also plays a crucial role in incorporating sulfur into cartilage in order to make and repair it. As we age, our glucosamine levels fall…and this could lead to joint deterioration.

Don’t let achy joints rob you of your active lifestyle!

Count Your Blessings

We have just been through a stressful week of watching a massive hurricane tear through the islands and head straight to Florida. We prepared all we could, but how do you ever really prepare? It Irma had hit our area of Florida at a Category 4 or 5, it would have been devastating. Category 2 was more than enough. I prayed and tried not to panic as we waited and the winds were battering my home.

What did I learn from Hurricane Irma?

I learned the value of family texting me almost hourly to be sure we were okay. Of family researching and telling me where there were still gas stations with any gas (I didn’t even mind waiting in line 30-45 minutes to get gas). My family reached out with love and support from 900 miles away and I felt that love. It gave me strength and encouragement.

Need Help In Reaching Your Fitness Goals?

I know I am not the ONLY ONE!! I read and study nutrition, dieting and exercise. I mentally prepare myself to start a diet…to start exercising…to drink enough water…to just get myself back on track. I have the day planned for starting my new LIFE….and a week later, I am no better off than I was before.

My intentions are good—I know what to do!! Why don’t I just do it? I beat myself up because I am not stronger and I don’t stick with a plan.  I don’t want to have a perfect body—just one that is healthy and that I am proud of.

The times I have done really well with diet and exercise were when I had a friend partnering with me. Is it accountability? Maybe, but I think it is more than that. The times when I was ready to ditch my diet or skip my gym day, my friend would be having a good day and would encourage me! And I would do the same for her on her weak moments.

So try to find a buddy with similar goals and watch your successes add up!!

Having A Bad Day?

I received this email from a friend yesterday—right at a time when life has not been easy. My husband has spent 13 days in the hospital—is home but still far from being well. As each new, discouraging report has come in, I have had to fight defeat…and tears!! I think God knew I needed to be encouraged and reminded to be thankful for my blessings. I hope this message will also bless you.

A famous writer was in his study. He picked up his pen and began writing: “Last year, my gallbladder was removed. I was stuck in bed due to this surgery for a long time.

The same year I reached the age of 60 and had to give up my favorite job. I had spent 30 years of my life with this publishing company.

The same year I experienced the death of my father.

In the same year my son failed in his medical exam because he had a car accident. He had to stay in the hospital with a cast on his leg for several days. And, the destruction of the car was a second loss.”

His concluding statement: “Alas! It was such a bad year!!”

When the writer’s wife entered the room, she found her husband looking dejected, sad and lost in his thoughts.

She carefully and surreptitiously read what he had written, silently left the room and came back shortly with another piece of paper on which she had written her summary of the year’s events placing it beside her husband’s paper.

When her husband saw that she had written something in response to his account of the year’s events, he read:

Last year I finally got rid of my gallbladder which had given me many years of pain.

I turned 60 with sound health and retired from my job. Now I can utilize my time to write better and with more focus and peace.

The same year my father, at the age of 95 without depending on anyone and without any critical conditions, met his Creator.

The same year, God blessed my son with life. My car was destroyed, but my son was alive and without permanent disability.

At the end she wrote: “This year was an immense blessing and it passed well!!

The same incidents but different viewpoints . . . .

MORAL: In our daily lives we must see that it’s not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. There is always, always, always something to be thankful for.

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING … And attitude is the one thing that we always, in every circumstance, have control over.

May we continue to see life’s blessings as we move forward on our life’s journey …even on difficult days

How Do You Celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day is a holiday celebrated in the U.S. the first Monday in September. It is a day off for most workers and often celebrated with picnics, athletic events and parades. But what is Labor Day—why was it established? I never think too much about it other than it means a nice long weekend off work!

Labor Day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers and is a tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. It was first celebrated in 1882 and became a federal holiday in 1894. It also marks the unofficial end of summer for many people in the U.S..

In the 1800’s many workers put in 12 hours days 7 days a week. In some states children as young as 6 worked in mills and factories. Many workers faced unsafe working conditions and in some jobs had no access to fresh air, sanitary bathrooms or breaks during their long days. Many years ago, Labor Day was established as the working man’s holiday.

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend and also celebrate our much improved working conditions.

Ten Minute Health Challenge

I am one of those people who try to do everything 100%. I have found that expecting myself to be nearly perfect is a task I can never achieve. What about you?

Let’s use exercise as an example. I read—and my cardiologist insists—that I should exercise 30 minutes most days of the week. That seems reasonable, doesn’t it?

Want my list of excuses? “I am overwhelmed by all I have to do and just don’t have the time”…”It’s too hot (or cold) outside to walk”…”It is boring to walk on the treadmill”….and I am sure you could add to my list.

The truth is that most days I am unable (or unwilling) to commit to the 30 minutes of exercise!! But wouldn’t 5 or 10 minutes be better than nothing?? Of course it would and maybe some days I could sneak in 10 minutes twice a day….and some days even get in the full 30 minutes!!

This is my challenge to me and to you. Every day work in some exercise. Don’t be defeated and do nothing if you don’t have time for a full 30 minutes of exercise.

Let’s commit to at least 10 minutes daily. You can do it…and so can I!!
