You Could Be At Risk For Heat Exhaustion

With many of us experiencing extremely high temperatures–and in Florida we have high humidity—we want to be sure you stay safe. It is the time of year for outdoor activities, but it is essential that we all take precautions!!

I recently received an informative magazine from our local hospital and wanted to pass along some info on Heat Exhaustion. It could never happen to you or me—right? We are all vulnerable.

Heath exhaustion occurs first but if left untreated or ignored, it can progress to heat stroke, which is a serious and potentially dangerous heat injury. So let’s all be aware of these symptoms of heat exhaustion:

*Skin that is cool and clammy, despite the heat
*Feeling faint or dizzy
*Feeling tired
*Heartbeat that is rapid, but weak
*Muscle cramps
*Nausea
*Headache

If these symptoms occur, find a cool place in the shade or an air-conditioned place—

*Rest or lie down
*Mist yourself with cool water
*Drink water or sports drinks

If your symptoms get worse or don’t improve within an hour, get immediate medical attention—Call 911!! Don’t hesitate—just call. Read more about the symptoms of heat stroke from the Mayo Clinic

Keep in mind these groups of people are at higher risk of heat exhaustion—young children, people over 65, anyone physically ill, anyone with heart disease or high blood pressure, people who have a mental illness.
