Next time you see your mouthwash on sale, you might want to pick up an extra bottle. Just be sure it is sugar free and alcohol based.
Growing up, mom had me use mouthwash for three things. Of course the first use was as a mouthwash. I also had to gargle with it before leaving the house if it was cold and flu season –I am not sure this was effective, but at least I had sweet smelling breath. The other use was as a treatment for dandruff. We would soak a cotton ball in mouthwash (listerene) and dab it on the scalp—wait a few minutes and then wash and condition as usual—and it worked!!
Here are some other mouthwash uses I received in an email from AARP:.
One study showed the average toothbrush sitting in a bathroom in a holder is full of bacteria. Gross– And we are putting that toothbrush in our mouths at least twice a day!! Put your toothbrush is a small container with mouthwash and let it soak for 10 minutes. Mouthwash has antiseptic qualities and will kill the germs.
Washing clothes—have you ever been unable to get a strong odor out of clothes? Add 1 cup of mouthwash to the water with your laundry detergent—then add clothes and wash as usual.
Do you love fresh flowers in your home? Keep then fresh longer by adding mouthwash to the water—2 Tablespoons mouthwash per gallon of water. The mouthwash will kill any bacteria and allow you to have beautiful fresh flowers for days longer.
Nail fungus can be almost impossible to get rid of. If you want to try a home remedy before prescription medicines, try soaking a cotton ball in mouthwash and soak the nail with it. If your nail fungus is particularly stubborn, mix ½ mouthwash and ½ vinegar. You will need to be diligent about treating the fungus.
Other uses I would have never thought of—
**Fill a small spray bottle with mouthwash and use as a hand sanitizer.
**Forget to bring deodorant on a trip? Use mouthwash on a cotton ball to dab under your arms (it will kill the bacteria that causes odor). DO NOT use right after shaving.
** Pour 1 cup mouthwash around the sides in your toilet and let sit 1 hour. Scrub and flush.
