The Amazing Elephant

Our good friend, Dave, sent me this picture of him and his wife riding on an elephant while on a wonderful vacation.  Dave said the ride was a bit bumpy!! I have never traveled abroad or ridden an elephant, but I became  intrigued to learn more about these giant creatures, elephants.

Did you know elephants can be as tall as 13 feet and weigh up to 15,000 pounds!! Wow! They have pillar like legs to hold up this great weight. I have been trying to lose a few pounds—thankfully I don’t have that much to worry about!! An adult elephant can eat 300-400 pounds of food a day.

Their trunks are 7 feet long and can suck up 2 gallons of water. This trunk acts as a nose (for smelling) and the upper lip. When they suck water up into their trunks, they either curl up their trunks and blow the water into their mouths or they spray it over their bodies to keep them cool. They also use their trunks to blow mud and dust over their bodies to protect them from the sun. Baby elephants can actually get a sunburn!! They sometimes hug by wrapping their trunks together, and baby elephants actually suck their trunks—like a baby sucks his thumb.

They can live up to 70 years in the wild and actually are quite intelligent. Their intelligence has been compared to that of primates and it is believed their memories can be for many years. Since the leaders have to guide their herds and during a dry season, their memories serve to guide them to watering holes they have used in the past. They also show grief, joy, anger and play.

Ladies, listen to this. They carry their babies (usually one at a time) for up to 22 months!! The females and their children stay together through their lives and travel together, while adult males travel alone or in groups. The mother elephants are very protective of their babies (calves). They communicate among themselves with some sounds that are not detectable to humans—others in loud trumpets. They also seem to communicate with nudges, kicks and other visual signs.

Back to the weight issue (can you tell it is on my mind?)–In considering the enormous size of elephants, I again ponder my own need to lose some weight. If I am not careful a few pounds extra will become permanent and more pounds will follow. In the winter months baggy sweatshirts, jackets and sweaters are my friends for concealing those extra pounds, but what will I do with the warm weather approaching? Watch our blog for slimming down hints in the coming weeks. Let’s do this together!
