Skin and Aging

LIPIDS – A lipid, in the most scientific of terms, is a chemical compound that is not water soluble.  Lipids are absolutely essential in skin care as the help to create the skin’s barrier function.  Because lipids are primarily responsible for the skin’s barrier function sometimes its referred to as the lipid barrier.

In the epidermal layer the lipids function to trap water and moister in the skin.  This is what allows skin to have a youthful and plump appearance.  The more lipids present in the skin the younger we look and the more our wrinkles will lessen and fade. (As we age we naturally loose lipids.)

Any damage to the lipids of our skin will prematurely age us.  Lipid peroxidation is when lipids are damaged by free radicals.  Free radical damage is a result of pollution, sun damage, and a diet lack in appropriate fruits and vegetables.  When a lipid becomes damaged is looses its permeability meaning that as a result the skin becomes sunk in and hollow.

In addition ceramides are the top way to replace our own natural lipids found in the skin barrier.  They most closely mimic our natural ceramides.

This is why it’s imperative to replace ceramides as we age.  We recommend UltaLife’s Phytoceramides as a great way to replace ceramides and reverse the aging process.

WHAT CAUSES THE AGING PROCESS – There is the free radical theory that states that organisms age because our cells acquire free radical damage over time.  Free radicals are usually chemically reactive causing oxidatve damage over time. Antioxidants are reducing agents that limit the amount damage a free radical can do and can further the healing process.  Antioxidants are primarily found in fresh fruits and vegetables.  You can also take vitamins and herbal supplements to improve the quantity of antioxidants you intake.

LAYERS OF THE SKIN – The skin has 3 primary layers. The epidermis is the outer layer of skin which provides our skin tone.  When we talk about the aging process, scarring or acne damage we are usually talking about damage to the epidermis.  The dermis is directly beneath the epidermis and contains connective tissue.  The deepest layer of skin is the hypodermis which contains the deepest layer of fat and connective tissue.  Taking phytoceramides will help to restore the water barrier of the epidermis causing our skin tone to plump and take on a more youthful and vital appearance.  Phytoceramides can also help restore the connective layer of the skin lessening the signs of aging from the inside out.

TIPS TO RESTORE YOUTH AND VITALITY – There are several different approaches to take when trying to improve the overall heath and vitality of your skin tone.  Simple approaches like adding more fuits and vegetables to your diet are important.  Exercise can improve your overall health and make the skin tone more vital.  There are other approaches like dry brushing the face regularly to stimulate the turn over of new skin cells in the epidermis.  A regular facial exercise program can also strength the connective tissue in the dermis of the skin causing an overall tightening effect that can reduce the signs of aging and drooping features.  And finally of course phytoceramides can improve the health of the skin from the inside out improve tone, elasticity, and overall plump.
