Perspective Changes Everything!

I was running some errands on Sunday and brought my youngest son, Daniel along with me. He’s my sidekick most of the time. Daniel is one of these dudes who likes to talk. And by that I mean he never stops 😉

I tend to stay in my head–because I’m a man of few words. So when I’m hanging with Daniel he’s talking a mile a minute and I’m doing my best to stay present and listen.

We pulled onto the highway and Daniel asked…”How long do you suppose those dashed lines are on the road?” He was talking about the white dashed lines that separate two lanes going in the same direction.

I looked over at the lines and said, “Maybe, 2 feet?”

I could see from the smile on his face that he was going to enjoy this conversation. Daniel loves to play with my head any chance he can. 😉

“So, you think they’re 2 feet long?”, he asked again.

I looked at the lines a little longer and said, “Yeah, I think they’re about 2 feet.”

Daniel replied…”Nope. They’re 10 FEET LONG!”

“10 FEET?! No way!”… I looked more closely. There was NO WAY they were 10 feet long.  I started telling him how 10 feet was like stacking his two sisters on top of each other…. and how that couldn’t possibly be true.

Then he pulled out his phone and read me how all it’s a federal guideline for every street, highway and rural road in the United States, where dashed lines separate traffic lanes or indicate where passing is allowed. Then for the next 10 minutes Daniel went on to explain why the dashes looked so short but were actually quite long.

I’ll spare you that conversation 😉 But the next time you’re out driving, take a look at the dashed lines on the road…….they’re 10 FEET LONG!

OK, so why am I sharing this with you? Because perspective is everything.

Truth is, it doesn’t really matter how long the white dashes are on the streets (unless it’s our job to paint them). So whether we see them as 2 feet long (like I do) or 10 feet long (as they really are)– it’s not going to make a difference in our world.

But “HOW WE SEE THINGS” in life (our perception) can mean the difference from being miserable, unhappy, angry, broke and broken or happy, joyful, productive, wealthy and abundant. Our perception determines

how hard or easy something is…
…if it’s possible or impossible
…if we deserve it or we don’t
…if we can have it or not
…if people love us or hate us

And the list could go on and on.

You’ve heard the saying, “Perception Is Reality”. And while that’s not actually true…Because no matter how long or short I believe the lines are–they’re still 10 feet long.

What IS true is that how we look at things greatly determines how we experience life.  Our perception becomes our reality. This is why it’s so critical to learn to look at life with optimistic, loving, hopeful and abundant eyes. Because what we look for, we find.

Want to change your life? It starts with being CLEAR on WHAT YOU WANT.

Then learn to FOCUS your attention (thoughts, words and actions) ONLY on what brings you CLOSER TO IT.
