As Mother’s Day approaches. I keep remembering my mom…things she did…things she said…and her love. If you are fortunate enough to still have your mother in your life, celebrate her. Let her know how much you love and appreciate her.
My mom made sure, as I was growing up, that I had everything I needed and most of the things I wanted. I took piano lessons as a young child all the way through high school. I had a piano and when I wanted to join the band, I got a flute and saxophone. Looking back, I realize mom and dad weren’t wealthy and they most likely did without things they wanted for themselves for me!!
I remember my mom around the house and cooking. Everything had to be washed with soap and water when cooking!! In fact, after grocery shopping, the carton of milk had to be washed before it went in the refrigerator. Eggs were washed with soap and water before using them in a recipe. I smile now when I think about these things and even as an adult, I always washed the eggs before cooking—if mom was around.
Mom used natural solutions as much as possible rather than chemical ones. She loved using vinegar. I remember when we saw tiny ants in the kitchen, she would take pieces of cotton saturated in vinegar and put them around on the cabinets, Did that work? I am not really sure, but I know our kitchen frequently smelled like vinegar.
After I was grown, married, had a child and a grandchild, she still worried about me if I drove home late at night alone. As her health failed, I was often with her until later and she always wanted me to call her when I got home so she would know I was safe. And the last thing she would say as I was leaving was “I love you”. Then we had a little battle of words over whether she loved me the most or I loved her the most. To this day, my child and i still do the same thing!
As we grow up and have our own homes and families, it is easy to get so engrossed in our lives and busy schedules, but don’t forget your Mother!! Take out some time to visit her—call her—send her a special card. Just let her know that she is important in your life.

- She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I’d get rid of that.
- I’d make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it not me.
- I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.
