Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday. Dr. King was one of those rare people who had a vision so big that it didn’t just serve him or his family or a city or a state or a country…It was a vision so powerful that it served (and transformed) humanity.
I’m sure you’re familiar with his famous, “I HAVE A DREAM” speech…(as I type the 
words I can hear his impassioned voice saying, “I HAVE A DREAM”…you probably can, too).
But what I find most inspiring about Dr. King isn’t written in the lines of that great speech.What I’m most inspired by is the commitment he made to live his life by returning hatred, evil, anger and the absolute worst outpouring of human behavior with…
LOVE and PEACE.
If you ever have the chance to visit Washington, DC and you take the monument tour, you’ll see the beautiful Martin Luther King, Jr monument. It’s this giant lighted circle with big beautiful stones that are carved with some of MLK’s most famous quotes.
One of my favorites is this:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Kind of reminds me of a song from that era that says…”Let there be Peace on Earth… and let it begin with me.”
We live in a troubled world. Some of things we’ve witnessed in our lifetime are unspeakable. But like MLK said…
Darkness can’t drive out darkness and Hate can’t drive out hate.
To make a difference we must BE different. We have to choose peace, love, gentleness and understanding.
We have to be light in darkness.
Because when we start practicing peace in our day-to-day lives and we choose to answer back with love…
…then Peace will prevail.
Today we honor Martin Luther King, Jr and I believe the best way we could do that would be to continue his legacy.
No matter what has happened up until now, today is a new opportunity to…
DO Better.
To BE Better.
We aren’t captives to our past. But we are captains of our future and the choices we make each day steer our ship closer to the destiny we choose.
Be that instrument of Peace that fills the hearts of those searching for meaning and hope.Don’t let fear, hatred, anger or worry overtake you. Ever.
The peace this world needs…begins right here…in you…in me.
