NO, it is not Memorial Day or the 4th of July! Often we take for granted the country we live in and our freedoms, but many men and women have paid dearly for us to have\u00a0the lives that we have–the freedoms that many people in the world do not have. We are a Blessed People!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Take a few minutes today and silently thank these patriots.\u00a0 It’s not\u00a0much to ask for the price they paid.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This was sent\u00a0to me recently \u00a0and I would like\u00a0to share it with you.<\/p>\n

Have you ever wondered\u00a0what happened to the <\/strong>56\u00a0<\/strong>men who
\n<\/strong>signed the Declaration of Independence?<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Five signers were captured\u00a0by the British as traitors, and tortured before they
\ndied.<\/p>\n

Twelve had their homes\u00a0ransacked and burned.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Two lost their sons serving\u00a0in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons
\ncaptured.<\/p>\n

Nine of the 56 fought and\u00a0died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.<\/p>\n

They signed and they pledged their lives, their\u00a0fortunes, and their sacred honor.<\/p>\n

What kind of men were they?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.<\/p>\n

Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large\u00a0plantation owners; men of means, well-educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well\u00a0that the penalty would be death if they were captured.<\/p>\n

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a\u00a0wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from
\nthe seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and\u00a0properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.<\/p>\n

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by\u00a0the British that he was forced to move his family\u00a0almost constantly.\u00a0 He served in the Congress without\u00a0pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His\u00a0possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his
\nreward.<\/p>\n

Vandals or soldiers looted the\u00a0properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett,\u00a0Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.<\/p>\n

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson,Jr., noted that\u00a0the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson\u00a0home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General\u00a0George Washington to open fire. The\u00a0home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.<\/p>\n

Francis Lewis had his home and\u00a0properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and\u00a0she died within a few months.<\/p>\n

John Hart was driven from his\u00a0wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children
\nfled for their lives. His fields and his\u00a0 gristmill\u00a0were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in\u00a0forests and caves, returning home to find his wife\u00a0dead and his children vanished.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Remember: <\/strong>freedom is never free!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We thank these early patriots, as well as those patriots\u00a0now fighting to KEEP our freedom!<\/strong><\/p>\n
