Can Walking Really Make A Difference?

Walking is probably the easiest way to begin an exercise program. You don’t need to join a gym or buy fancy equipment—just a pair of good supportive shoes! It’s easy on your joints and can be done anytime of the day or night. You can walk outdoors….in a mall…on a treadmill in your house. I used to work in a dental office which had a big circular path through both sides of the office. At lunch time, when there were no patients, two of us would power walk around and around.

How much do you need to walk? 10,000 steps most days of the week is recommended—that is approximately 5 miles per day. You say you are just starting to exercise? First, check with your doctor. Then start out moderately—Rome wasn’t built in a day!!  If you can only do 2000 steps to begin, that is great. Keep on doing the 2000 steps and as you are able, add another 100 or 200 steps. Build gradually. Using a pedometer to count your steps is a good idea—and many phones have a health app that will count your steps.

How fast should you walk? It is generally recommended to walk about 3.0 miles per hour (or more) if you are able. 3.0 miles per hour would mean you would walk a mile in 20 minutes. Walk faster if your goal is to lose weight. Web MD recommends walking briskly a total of 300 minutes per week. If you walk 5 days of the week, that is one hour per day. Don’t get overwhelmed thinking you cannot possibly walk for an hour. Divide the time up into 2 or 3 sessions per day—and remember any walking is better than none!

Can you walk if you have back pain? Again, always consult your doctor and get his approval. Most doctors will recommend physical therapy for people with chronic lower back pain….and in some cases walking can be just as effective. You are not doing a marathon—just try to walk 20-40 minutes two or three times a week. Web MD

Walking is good for your overall health—can help you lose pounds—can help to keep you limber—can improve your mood—prevent or manage many health conditions such as heart, blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.—strengthen your bones and muscles. For those with osteopenia or osteoporosis, weight bearing exercise is recommended—walking is perfect for that!

Don’t Let Stress Rule Your Life!

Trying to keep up with the daily demands of LIFE (job, finances, home, family, etc) can be overwhelming!! No matter how hard we try to stay calm, things come up that cause stress in our lives. One main stressor for me in the past two years has been my car!! It is customized (at great expense) for my husband’s power chair so we cannot just trade it in. We have had some major bills and every time the light comes on signaling a problem, I can feel the stress mounting in my body. I have done nothing to cause the car problem and I cannot fix it myself so I should be able to just take it to the mechanic and not be concerned….but I have not figured out how to do that!

How about you? What is stressing you? Do you ever experience anxiety–panic attacks–feel worried–feel your heart race? You are not alone!! Nearly 1 in 5 adults suffer from anxiety.

Count Your Blessings

We have just been through a stressful week of watching a massive hurricane tear through the islands and head straight to Florida. We prepared all we could, but how do you ever really prepare? It Irma had hit our area of Florida at a Category 4 or 5, it would have been devastating. Category 2 was more than enough. I prayed and tried not to panic as we waited and the winds were battering my home.

What did I learn from Hurricane Irma?

I learned the value of family texting me almost hourly to be sure we were okay. Of family researching and telling me where there were still gas stations with any gas (I didn’t even mind waiting in line 30-45 minutes to get gas). My family reached out with love and support from 900 miles away and I felt that love. It gave me strength and encouragement.

Why Am I So Stressed?

Tired all the time? Stressed to the MAX? When I look around, I see many people so stressed trying to live their normal lives, which can be SUPER demanding. I used to think I was tired all the time because I am no longer 29, but could it be something more than that?

What do you know about your adrenal glands?

Are You Ready To SPRING AHEAD?

Don’t you love FALL Daylight Savings time change when you get an extra hour of sleep? Now prepare yourself for the SPRING Daylight Savings time change when you will lose an hour of sleep!! That will be this weekend so when you prepare for bed Saturday, March 11, 2017, move your clocks ahead one hour.

I read an interesting article on health problems associated with this time change. You might like to read it also—READ IT HERE  but I will share with you the general points.

After turning your clocks forward an hour, you might be out of sorts, tired and lethargic for a few days. Why is that? Melatonin is the hormone that makes us feel sleepy and when the sun is up for longer, your sleep cycle can be disturbed. So if next week you have trouble falling asleep and staying awake during the day, blame it on DST!
